In 2021, Mari Selvaraj will direct a Tamil-language action drama titled Karnan. It is produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu (audio speaker iconpronunciation (help*info)). Starring Dhanush, Lal, Yogi Babu, Natarajan Subramaniam, and Rajisha Vijayan (for her Tamil debut) are Dhanush, Lal, Yogi Babu, and Lal.
Taking hints from the 1995 Kodiyankulam caste violence, the film’s music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, the cinematography is handled by Theni Eswar, and the editing by Selva R. K. Featuring the titular character Karnan, conservative individual fighting for the rights of his people, the story loosely echoes the saga of the Kodiyankulam caste violence.
An announcement that the film will be called Karnan was made in January 2020, after its brief pre-production period. Approximately half of the film takes place on a farm outside Thoothukudi. A year after the launch of the film, the movie was filmed and finished in December 2020; however, production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Title issue
In the wake of the movie’s title announcement on 6 January, fans of Sivaji Ganesan expressed their outrage, as Ganesan played Karnan in 1964’s film of the same name R. Chandrashekharan, president of the Sivaji Social Welfare Association, wrote a letter to Thanu asking for the film’s title to be changed.
According to R. Chandrashekharan, Karnan refers to a giver, to a man who gives benevolently. But, your film is about someone who fights for rights. A Mahabharata movie title would be appropriate, but for a social film, it would be inappropriate. In doing so, he added, not only would Ganesan fans be hurt, but so would Mahabharata fans as well.
Protests from Tamil Nadu Mukkulathor Pulipadai
Former actor and politician Karunas, of the Tamil Nadu Mukkulathor Pulipadai, demanded the banning of the movie since its premise was allegedly the Kodiyankulam caste riots which occurred in 1995. Party members declared that the movie is degrading to police and that it is against a particular caste.
They also said that these movies will cause disorder in society, citing a scene where Dhanush’s character attacks a police station. Mari Selvaraj, the director of the film, should also be arrested for instigating caste-based riots, he continued.
After another halt to filming on 4 March 2020, the project was abandoned. A response to the issue has been provided by Selvaraj, who asserted that the film has nothing to do with the Kodiyankulam Caste Riots.
