MediaTek Dimensity 9200 Vs Google Tensor G2 Which is Better

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 vs Google Tensor G2: MediaTek has launched the Dimensity 9200 as its new flagship chipset that most phones will use in 2023. This chipset will compete with the likes of the Tensor G2 chipset from Google and others. In this post, the focus will be on which is better between the Tensor G2 and Dimensity 9200.

The strength of the Google Tensor G2 chipset has always been its AI capabilities that enable lots of daily useful features. However, the Dimensity 9200 is coming with more AI features and improved CPU and GPU performance, and better efficiency. So, between the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 vs Google Tensor G2 which is actually better? Well, let’s find out from the specs comparison below.

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 vs Google Tensor G2

Process Technology & Power Management

The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 and Google Tensor G2 chipsets are both built on a 4nm process technology. However, the Dimensity 9200 is built on TSMC’s 2nd 4nm process technology which promises to be more power efficient. Usually, chipsets that are built on the 4nm process are fast and use less power to send and received data. But because the Dimensity 9200 is using the 2nd generation of this technology, it is more power efficient and MediaTek has also included a new heat dissipation technique in the chipset.
According to MediaTek, the Dimensity 9200 is about 20x more power efficient than its predecessor the Dimensity 9000. If this is anything to go by, this means the Dimesity 9200 should be about 25x more power efficient than the Tensor G2. This does not mean that the Tensor G2 chipset overheats or gets hot easily.
It however does mean that under intensive use and when rendering high graphics or playing graphics-intensive games for a long time, the Dimensity 9200 will perform better for a longer time. Also, the Dimensity 9200 won’t drop frame rates as quickly as the Tensor G2 under intensive use.

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 vs Google Tensor G2: CPU

The Dimensity 9200 and Tensor G2 feature Octa-core processors. But, both chipsets have different CPU cores and CPU speeds. The Google Tensor G2 has two performance cores (2x Cortex-X1) with a CPU speed of 2.85GHz, two prime cores (2x Cortex-A78) with a CPU speed of 2.35GHz, and four efficiency cores (4x Cortex-A55) with a CPU speed of 1.80GHz. In comparison, the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 has one performance core (1x Cortex-X3) with a CPU speed of 3.05GHz, three prime cores (3x Cortex-A715) with a CPU speed of 2.85GHz, and four efficiency cores (4x Cortex-A510) with a CPU speed of 1.80GHz.

Comparing the CPU cores of both chipsets shows that the Dimensity 9200 has newer and faster CPU cores. As you can see from the table above, the Google Tensor 2 features the older Cortex X1 performance core while the Dimensity 9200 features the newer Cortex X3 performance core. The same is true for the price cores on both chipsets.

Another important difference to point out is that the performance and prime cores of the Dimensity 9200 have faster speeds. So, these cores will send and receive data faster than those of the Tensor G2 chipset. It is safe to say that the Dimensity 9200 has better performance than the Tensor G2 chipset and even the Gekkbenche and AnTuTu results of both chipsets agree (see the table below).

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 vs Google Tensor G2: GPU & AI

The Google Tensor G2 features the Mali-G710 MC10 GPU while the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 features the ARM Immortalis-G715 GPU. In the areas of graphics rendering, the ARM Immortalis-G715 GPU of the Dimensity 9200 beats the Mali-G710 MC10 f the Tensor G2. The ARM Immortalis-G715 GPU has 11 cores which are more cores that the ones available in the Mali-G70 MC10 GPU. ARM Immortalis-G715 also renders graphics faster and can perform at its optimum for longer because its chipset is more power efficient.

AI is one area where the Tensor G2 is very impressive. It seems the intention of Google with the Tensor G2 chipset is not primarily about power but AI and this is clearly seen in the various automation features available in the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The Tensor G2 chipset has one of the best AI integration you can think of.

However, the Dimensity 9200 features a new 6th Gen APU (APU 690) AI machine. Amongst other things, the new 6th Gen APU (APU 690) brings Ray Tracing and if OEMs are serious, they can add lots of AI functionalities to a phone that is powered by the Dimensity 9200 chipset.

If OEMs truly take advantage and utilize most of the AI capabilities of the 6th Gen APU (APU 690) AI machine, we could have phones powered by the Dimensity 9200 that are as smart as the Pixel 7 Pro. And this brings us to another interesting part of this comparison, Image Signal Processing (ISP).

 

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 vs Google Tensor G2: ISP

The Image Signal Processing (ISP) on the Dimensity 9200 is the Imagiq 890 while that of the Google Tensor G2 is the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU). The TPU in the Tensor G2 is Google’s custom next-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) and it brings some major improvements over its predecessor and some really impressive automation.

The new Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) supports up to a 108MP camera sensor while the new Imagiq 890 currently supports up to a 200MP camera sensor. Both ISPs allow devices to record videos in RAW format and support Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, 8K video recording, etc. With the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), you can enjoy features such as Guided Frame, Photo Unblur, Pro Level Zoom, etc.
The Imagiq 890 of the Dimensity 9200 is also a very impressive ISP. It can capture and stream HDR videos using multiple cameras at once, comes with RGBW sensor native support, and can capture steady videos in 8K resolution.

The ISP on both chipsets are very good and have the capabilities to fuse AI and ISP. However, the Google Tensor G2 has already integrated its ISP and AI and the new camera features available in the Google Pixel 7 series confirm this. We hope OEMs will integrate the ISP and AI of the Dimensity 9200 to give users proper integration and more camera features in phones powered by the chipset.

 

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 vs Google Tensor G2: Connectivity

The connectivity options available on both chipsets are very similar. Both chipsets have support for 5G connectivity but have different 5G MODEM inside. The Tensor G2 has the G5300B 5G MODEM from Samsung while the Dimensity 9200 has the X65 MODEM from Qualcomm.

Other connectivity options available on both chipsets are NFC, Bluetooth 5.3, GPS, Ultra Wideband (UWB) support, an online payment system, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, Sub 6 GHz 5G, mmWave 5G, Radio, etc. The peak download speed of the Dimensity 9200 is up to 10Gbps and this is faster than the peak download speed of the Tensor G2 which is estimated to be about 7Gbps.

So, between the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 and Google Tensor G2 which is better? This MediaTek Dimensity 9200 vs Google Tensor G2 shows that when it comes to performance and power efficiency, the Dimensity 9200 is better than the Tensor G2.

The Dimensity 9200 has better CPU cores, a better GPU, advanced AI, and a better ISP. However, because the Diimensity 9200 is used by third-party companies, we might not get to see its full potential in a smartphone and this is where the Google Tensor G2 has an edge. The Tensor G2 is made and used by Google in its Pixel phones and this allows the company to properly utilize the chipset and make it a better-automated phone.

So in conclusion, if playing games and rendering high graphics are your priorities, you should buy a phone that is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9200. But, if you need a phone that is truly smart and fully automated, then you should buy a phone that is powered by the Google Tensor G2. Note that phones powered by the Tensor G2 can also play games and render graphics but not as fast and smooth as phones with a Dimensity 9200 would and vice versa.
