Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Dimensity 9200: The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset is Qualcomm’s response to MediaTek for releasing the Dimensity 9200 chipset. The battle for the best chipset maker in the android world is getting intense and although Qualcomm has slowed down over the years, the company is picking up the pace again with its new chipset.
Truth is, we’ll get to see both chipsets in 2023 flagship smartphones but all things being equal, phones that feature the Dimensity 9200 chipset will be cheaper. If that is the case, does it still make sense to buy phones that feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset if you can save money and get good performance on phones that feature the Dimensity 9200?
To Respond the question above, we have put together this Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Dimensity 9200 specs comparison. In this comparison, we’ll highlight the differences and similarities between these chipsets, and in the end, you’ll understand why you should spend the extra money and buy phones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
Process Technology & Power Management
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and MediaTek Dimensity 9200 are 5G chipsets that are built on the second generation of TSMC’s 4nm process technology. This means both chipsets have similar power efficiency but the Qualcomm chipset has a slightly better efficiency thanks to the arrangement of its CPU cores and efficiency core speed.
Both chipsets have the same Cortex-X510 efficiency core but the frequency of this core in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is 2.0GHz while on the Dimensity 9200 it is 1.8GHz. According to Qualcomm, its new chipset is about 40% more power efficient than its predecessor which means it could be about 10% more power efficient than the Dimensity 9200.
Truth is, you won’t notice the difference in power management in both chipsets at a glance. But, when you stress phones that feature both phones when playing graphics-intensive games for a long time, chances are the Snapdragon chipset will perform consistently for a longer time.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Dimensity 9200: CPU
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Dimensity 9200
Both the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and MediaTe Dimensity 9200 chipsets feature Octa-core processors. However, the CPU arrangements and speed on both chipsets are different.
The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 has one performance core (1x Cortex-X3) with a CPU speed of 3.05GHz, three prime cores (3x Cortex-A715) with a CPU speed of 2.85GHz, and four efficiency cores (4x Cortex-A510) with a CPU speed of 1.80GHz. In comparison, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has one performance core (1x Cortex-X3) with a CPU speed of 3.2GHz, four prime cores (2x Cortex-A715 & 2x Cortex-A710) with a CPU speed of 2.8GHz, and three efficiency cores (3x Cortex-A510) with a CPU speed of 2.0GHz.
Comparing the CPU cores of both chipsets shows that the CPU cores of the Snapdragon chipset are arranged in such a way for it to be more powerful. Its performance core is faster and it features four prime cores which are one more than what is in the Dimensity chipset. The efficiency cores of the Snapdragon chipset are three which is one less than that of the Dimensity chipset but it has a faster frequency.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset is clearly built for power and it sure is more powerful than the Dimensity 9200. A Geekbench test and AnTuTu scores of both chipsets also confirm that the Snapdragon chip is the more powerful chipset of both chipsets. See details o the Geekbench and AnTuTu results in the table below.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Dimensity 9200: GPU & AI
The GPU inside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Dimensity 9200 are Adreno 740 and Immortalis-G715 respectively. Both are very powerful GPUs that can process and render high graphics. So, when it comes to playing graphics-intensive games, phones powered by both chipsets will be awesome without any issues. In fact, the GPU on both chipsets now features Real-Time Ray Tracing and other features when playing games.
As per AI, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has the Qualcomm Hexagon Processor AI engine and the Dimensity 9200 has the MediaTek APU 690 AI engine. The AI engines on both chipsets are very powerful and support lots of impressive features like Live Translation, improving gaming performance, and assisting the ISP to produce better photos and videos.
The more impressive thing about the AI capabilities on these chipsets is that the AI engine is linked with the CPU, GPU, and ISP. This allows for better performance of the CPU, GPU, and ISP and improves the overall performance of the chipsets.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Dimensity 9200: ISP
The Image Signal Processing (ISP) on the Dimensity 9200 is the Imagiq 890 while that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the Qualcomm Spectra. The ISP on both chipsets have similar features like support for up to 200MP sensor, recording videos in RAW format, and supporting Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, 8K video recording, etc.
The ISP on both chipsets can also capture and stream HDR videos using multiple cameras at once. But one of the major advantages of MediaTek’s Imagiq 890 ISP is that it comes with RGBW sensor native support. While Qualcomm did not specify if the Qualcomm Spectra has RGBW sensor native support, it does confirm that the ISP can be configured to work directly with camera sensors which will improve the quality of photos and videos significantly.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Dimensity 9200: Connectivity
There are lots of connectivity options available on both chipsets. Connectivity options on both chipsets include a 5G network, NFC, Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 7, GPS, Ultra Wideband (UWB) support, an online payment system, Sub 6 GHz 5G, mmWave 5G, Radio, etc.
The 5G MODEM in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is Qualcomm’s X70 5G Modem while that of the Dimensty 9200 is the MediaTek T800 5G MODEM. The peak download speed of the 5G MODEM in the Snapdragon chipset is 10Gbps which is better than the 7.5Gbps of the Dimensity chipset.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Dimensity 9200: Conclusion
The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 is no doubt a very good chipset but once again Qualcomm has MediaTek playing the catch-up game. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset is better than the Dimensity 9200. Both chipsets do have some similarities like the 4nm process technology, the same Cortex-X3 performance core, and Cortext-X715 prime cores, ISP having support for up 200MP sensors, GPU having Ray Tracing technology, and AI integration with CPU, CPU, and ISP.
However, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is better in some ways. Its Cortext-X3 core is faster and it now has four prime cores instead of just three found in the Dimensity 9200. Its 5G MODEM is also better than that of the Dimensity 9200 and a close look shows that the components of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 have more features.
